Saving both Energy and MoneyBusinesses and organisations can do something to help toward reducing impact on the environment of carbon dioxide emissions. Every business has a part to play and it needn't cost a penny. The easiest way to make a difference is to reduce energy use – which will also bring substantial cost savings. Simple methods such as adopting a “switch it off“ policy for example matching use of machinery lighting and heating to production and occupancy patterns can help business save both money and reduce climate change. Further energy savings are available using technical fixes such as installing lighting and heating controls or replacing old plant with new energy efficient plant. The problem is in identifying where these savings are most lucrative. Investment in the wrong area can lead to waste of money and no resulting energy efficiency improvement. Obtaining energy savings whilst making money therefore does take time and effort - this is why many organisations often need to outsource for assistance. Some organisations (those that consume a significant amount of energy equal to an annual cost over £50,000) can obtain free advice from the Carbon Trust. Smaller organisations may need to approach a skilled energy consultant directly and meet the costs of the advice given themselves.
